Javier Márquez: The Soulful Voice of the Duduk in Film, TV, and New Age Music

I virtually met Javier through Iván Martínez Lacámara, who mentioned him several times.

He’s also one of Cinematic Alpha’s first customers and later a testimonial, so, in a way, a really nice friendship has formed.

Javier Márquez is an award-winning composer, producer, and musician born in Córdoba (Spain) in 1978. He studied guitar and oboe at the Córdoba Music Conservatory. Attracted by instrumental music and composition, he has been influenced by different styles such as classical music, New Age, folk, and certain types of fusion. He composes, arranges, and produces music at his studio and participates in other musicians’ recordings, providing oboe, ethnic flutes, Armenian duduk, Bulgarian kaval, whistles, soprano sax, and guitars.

In May 2021, he released his album “The Shelter Point”, which achieved remarkable recognition:

  • Winner – Hollywood Music in Media Award (November 2021) in the New Age/Ambient category for the track “The Shelter Point.”
  • Winner – Double Silver Medal at the Global Music Awards (January 2022) in Best New Age and Best Album categories.

He has recorded duduk on the soundtrack of Iván M. Lacámara for Season 5 of “Money Heist” (La Casa de Papel, Netflix).

In 2020, he participated in recording Bansuri, Duduk, and Kaval (as featuring artist) on the track “Sirdes Mouté u Tapour” from violinist Ara Malikian’s latest album “ARA”.

He also participated in the recording of the new album by Pipo Romero, “Ideario” (Universal Music) and is part of his live Quintet. In 2021, he co-produced and recorded oboe and whistles for Romero’s album “Ikigai.”

Javier has collaborated on the soundtracks of composer Pablo Cervantes for the film Jaulas, the short film El Prenauta, and the TV series Promesas de arena for Spanish National TV and Amazon Prime Video.

He was part of the recordings for Pavel Urkiza’s project “La ruta de las almas”, performed at EXIB Music in Bilbao (2014) and the Global Cuba Fest in Miami, USA (2016). He also contributed to the albums Filin Progresivo: 2004-2014 and Regreso a la tierra (2022).

This year, he recorded duduk for the new album of Iberian folklorist and singer Eliseo Parra, and participated in the soundtrack for the 2023 film “Ocho Apellidos Marroquís” by Vanessa Garde.

In addition to his session work, Javier continues his solo career. His latest album, “Momentum”, has been highly praised by critics for its emotional depth, blending duduk, ethnic flutes, synth textures, and orchestral arrangements. It was nominated for Best New Age Album at the World Entertainment Awards 2024. Notably, his track “Resilience” has been singled out as “incredibly beautiful and calming,” while pieces like “Quietude” showcase his mastery of creating serene yet powerful atmospheres.

In 2012, he released the album “Si mi niño se durmiera”, a compilation of lullabies arranged in various modern styles, financed by the Regional Ministry of Education of Andalusia.

As a producer, he has worked on Luis Medina’s albums “Presente Continuo” and “DuDú” with winds, recording, editing, and mixing, remaining a member of the band since 2006.

Javier has studied with masters such as Miguel Quirós, Vicente Llimerá, Thomas Indermühle, José Manuel González (oboe), Hovhannes Karakhanyan (Armenian duduk), Antonio Toledo, Horacio Salinas (Inti Illimani), Toquinho, Javier Ruibal (guitar), and attended masterclasses with Pat Metheny, Djavan, Ralf Towner (Oregon), Fito Páez, and Marcus Miller.

Quietude remains one of Javier’s most emblematic songs, and he is currently working on his next studio album while collaborating on new projects for other artists and media productions.
